Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
– Acts 14:23 (NIV)
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org
Notice that this group’s trust was not in the leadership that they had appointed, but in the LORD. Prayer and fasting realigns our perspective. These spiritual disciplines take our eyes off of techniques and put them squarely upon the only One who can cause a church to flourish. May we be a people who exhibit a trust in the LORD because we are seeking Him with our whole heart. Leaders will not be effective if they are being idolized for their skills; they desperately need to be reminded of the One who is ultimately over all leadership.
